Prayer For Someone Losing A Loved One

Dear Lord,

I lift up Your dear, grieving child to You today.

Thank You for being the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3). Please help this child of Yours to feel Your loving arms of comfort around them now and always.

Thank You for promising to never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6; Hebrews 13:5). I pray that Your grieving child would have a strong sense of Your presence in the midst of their pain.

Thank You that You, too, were a man of sorrows, familiar with suffering, and acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3). Help Your precious one to find consolation in knowing that You can sympathize and empathize with their pain, since You have experienced it Yourself.

Thank You for enduring the excruciating pain of sacrificing Your one and only Son, of watching Him be crucified, of enduring the indescribable separation from Him. Thank You for going to such great lengths to show us Your love. Help Your child now to see the depth of Your love and the extent of Your understanding.

Thank You for being a God who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3). Please heal this dear child's broken heart. Bind up their wounds. Grant them an unwavering hope in You, the ultimate physician and healer. And Lord, please give them patience as they wait on You.

Thank You for promising that one day, You will wipe every tear from Your children's eyes. Thank You for promising that one day there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain (Revelation 21:4). Please use this experience to increase Your child's desire to be with You in heaven.

Help Your dear child to realize that even though it might not feel this way at the moment, this light and momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison (2 Corinthians 4:17).

Lord, even in the midst of grief, I pray that hope would prevail. Cause Your grieving one to possess an anchor of hope within, firm and secure (Hebrews 6:19). Thank You that Your grace is sufficient, and that Your power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Show us Your glory even in the midst of heartache.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

God of love and mercy,

overflow with grief,
unanswered questions
and such a sense of loss.

Lord, it was You that made us in Your image, with emotions and feelings, and I am hurting so much because of this loss. Lord, I feel utterly bewildered by all that has gone on and hardly know which way to turn. I just need Your strength to uphold me in this time of such enormous loss and such overwhelming grief.

I know that the Bible says that underneath are Your everlasting arms, and Lord, my pain is so deep that I really need Your grace and strength to comfort and succour me at this time. I ask You to draw very close to me and let me feel Your presence alongside me, in this difficult time of such great sadness.

Give me peace in my heart and comfort me I pray. Lead me by still waters and restore my soul. Keep my faith from faltering, hold me close to Your heart of love, and bind up my brokenness. The Bible says that You came to heal up the broken-hearted and refresh the soul of those that are hurting. Lord, today I ask that You would help and strengthen me in this time of loss. In Jesus' name,

Amen.

O Lord, my God, thank you that you are my rock and fortress, I can always find refuge in you. You have said that whoever follows you will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. As I feel the darkness of grief and sorrow at this time, shine your light on my life. Remind me that my hope is found in you. May your love surround me, your Spirit guide me, your voice cheer me, your peace calm me, your shield protect me, your wisdom arm me, wherever you may lead me. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Compassionate and loving Father, thank you that I am never alone, your presence calms the troubled sea of my life and speaks peace to my soul. Your word says that my faith will never be put to shame when my trust is in you. Hear my prayer as I ask for comfort in dealing with the loss of my loved one. Help me to find strength and peace in your presence. Restore joy to my soul. Lord, bless me and keep me, make your face shine upon me. Turn your face towards me and give me peace. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

My heart is feels like a thousand knives are running through it. I am weary, spent, and just so sad. Please, help me! Hear my prayers. Hold me and my family up. Give us strength. Be present. Be persistent in your love. Carry us through this heartache. Sustain us. Bring us joy and hope.

I cry for those of us left behind, for the lonely ones with hollows in our hearts. I ask You to comfort us, give peace, restore hope, and lavish us with love, family, and belonging. In the depths of loss, meet us with Yourself.

I cry for the legacy this loved one leaves, for the ways the world has been made different by their presence, for the memories that become both more beautiful and more painful on this side of death. And I pray that the work You have accomplished in this remarkable life will grow deeper, wider, and stronger in the days to come, uninhibited by a weak opponent like death.
