Gracious God, lover of souls,
You have made us for community,
For relationships fixed in time and space,
Woven through common experiences,
Inspired by shared struggles.
Dedicated to common goals.
We give thanks for this nation of ours,
For its commitment to liberty,
For the vision of its founders,
For the bravery of its citizenry,
For its defense of the weak,
For its love of justice.
We give thanks for our fellow Americans,
For their goodness and generosity,
For the dreams that brought us all to this land,
For the genius and industry of every generation,
For the rich tapestry of our cultural heritage,
For commitments that have made many, one.
On this day of national celebration,
As we mark the anniversary
Of this great experiment,
We pray
Strengthen us in our resolve to act justly,
To care for the weak,
To defend the persecuted,
And to foster freedom and peace.
When we fail,
Make us quick to confess our faults,
Strong enough to amend our ways,
And mindful of the inheritance entrusted to us.
Defend us, we pray, against
Tyrannies that challenge us from without,
Ideologies that erode from within,
And the carelessness that so easily invades our hearts.
Make us worthy of the sacrifices made by so many,
Inspire us to own for ourselves the best of our traditions,
Lend genius to our efforts,
And instill virtue in our children.
And remind us all, that we enjoy this land of ours
For only a brief time,
As the place where we do our work,
Delight in our families,
Care for our neighbors,
And nurture our faith.
For one day, all nations and races
Will appear before your throne,
Measured by your justice,
Redeemed by your grace,
Dependent upon your love,
Indebted to your wisdom.
Guide us, then, we ask.
Let us never confuse the gift we have been given with the Giver,
Let us never confuse our will with yours,
Let us never suppose that our lives matter more than those of others.
Lead us, instead, to live out of gratitude,
And serve with abandon,
Confident that our lives
And the life of our nation is in your hands.
Amen.
Lord God, thank you for more than 200 years of freedom, protection, and blessing in America.
Help us not to forget the blessings and opportunity you give us each day.
Make us not forget the sacrifice of the many for all of us who live free today in our nation.
We pray for the safety of all of our military today.
We pray for our leaders from the mayors to the President that you would guide them to make wise and godly decisions that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in godliness and honesty, as the Scripture says, (I Timothy 2:1-4).
Father, remind us to pray when we are tempted to complain.
Remind us to have faith.
Remind us to see our prayers as a tool of influence.
You are that influence.
We pray for godly leaders and a godly influence in our homes, churches, institutions, businesses, and communities across our nation.
Most of all, we thank you for your presence and power for you are the Source of all holiness, happiness, joy, and contentment. Amen.
Gracious God, on this day in which Americans celebrate independence, I offer prayers for my country and its leaders.
First, I thank you for all the ways you have blessed us through the United States. Though our nation is far from perfect, nevertheless, it has been the source of much goodness, both for American citizens and for the world. In particular, I thank you today for the freedom we have to worship you and live out our faith without fear. In today's world, this is nothing to take for granted . . . even though I do so often take it for granted.
Second, I pray for my national leaders today. I pray for President Obama and his administration, for those who serve in the House of Representatives and in the Senate, for members of the Supreme Court and the federal courts, for the leaders of the U.S. Military and for all who serve in the federal government. Our nation faces such great challenges, both at home and abroad. Thus, we ask you to grant to all of these leaders your wisdom. Give them hearts that seek you and your truth. Guide them in your ways.
All praise be to you, King of kings, because you are the ultimate authority in this universe. You are always right, always good, always gracious, always just. Amen.
On this Independence Day I am reminded of all those who have sacrificed for my freedom, following the example of your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me not take my freedom, both physical and spiritual, for granted. May I always remember that my freedom was purchases with a very high price. My freedom cost others their very lives.
Lord, today, bless those who have served and continue to give their lives for my freedom. With favor and bounty meet their needs and watch over their families.
Help me to live my life in a way that glorifies you, Lord. Give me the strength to be a blessing in someone else's life today, and grant me the opportunity to lead others into the freedom that can be found in knowing Christ.
Amen
We lift up our hearts, O God,
on this day of celebration in gratitude
for the gift of being Americans.
We rejoice with all those who share
in the great dream of freedom
and dignity for all.
With flags and feasting,
with family and friends
we salute those who have sacrificed
that we might have the opportunity
to bring to fulfillment
our many God-given gifts.
As we deny all prejudice
a place in our hearts,
may we also clearly declare
our intention to work for the time
when all people,
regardless of race, religion, or sex,
will be granted equal dignity
and worth.
Come, O gracious God,
who led your children Israel from slavery,
keep us free from all
that might hold us in bondage.
Bless our country and join
our simple celebration
that we may praise you,
our Source of freedom,
the One in whom we place our trust.
Lord, we stand today as our forefathers have stood before You in times gone by, Celebrating our history and revelling in all the great things that our country has achieved. On this day we rejoice in the favor You have graciously given us. We thank You for the blessings of liberty, for this generation and for the generations to come. We thank You for our independence, peace and for all those who have bravely given their lives in the defence of freedom and justice. We thank You that Your gracious and provident hand has given us so much. Yet as a nation and people we have not always chosen the right way. We ask You to forgive us for these times. On this day we commit ourselves to wholeheartedly honoring and serving You. With everything that we are, we lay our lives before You. Make us a generous people, A holy nation, A people set aside to love You forever, For the sake of the land of the brave and free, And the peoples and nations of this world. Today, we do not presume Your grace for our country. Our land is in need of You, Our people are in need of You, Our industry and business is in need of You. May we look only to You This Independence Day, dependent on You. Please come now by Your glorious Holy Spirit, Breathe new life into the sinews of this nation. May justice flow like rivers, And righteousness like a never failing stream, Until the whole of our country is covered with Your glory, As the waters cover the sea. We ask all this in the wonderful name of Jesus, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit. One God, now and for all eternity. Amen.
