Prayer For Bushfire Victims

Our heavenly Father, creator of all things and especially the creator of this land and its original peoples, we call out to you in these desperate times as we see the first catastrophic fire warnings for New South Wales, as fires have already swept across several parts of our land.

Our hearts cry out to you in desperation for those whose properties are affected by ravaging fires and whose very lives are in danger.

Father we pray, in your mercy, restrain the forces of nature from creating catastrophic damage; in your mercy protect human life.

Guard those who selflessly step into the breech to fight these fires. Guide police and authorities who help evacuate and shelter those who are displaced. Bring comfort and healing to all who suffer loss.

Remembering that long ago you extended your hand through your servant Moses to stop the waters and then to return the waters to their normal course, so we pray for rain.

In your mercy, we pray for drenching rain.

We pray that despite the forecasts, in your miraculous power you would bring forth rain to quench these fires and to bring life back into the earth, so that crops may grow and farmers may bring forth the harvest of the land again.

We bring these requests before your throne, in the name of your Son, who died and rose again for our deliverance,

Amen.

God of life and death,
our prayers today are where our hearts and minds
have been during these last days
and where they have been drawn so early in this season;
with those communities and individuals
whose lives have been damaged
in differing ways by the bushfires.

We pray for all those who have been affected;
for the families and friends of those who have been killed.

We pray for those who are missing,
for their safety, for the fears of those who love them;
bring each one home safe, we pray.

We pray for those who have been injured and survived:
for physical and emotional trauma;
for the fear and helplessness experienced;
for the anger and frustration at the injustice
of unavoidable disaster.

We pray for those who have lost their home and property
or are facing such loss:
for those who have been forced to leave
their memories and belongings;
for the fear & disorientation of all involved;
Heal them from their nightmare memories.

We are aware of those who have lost stock,
or are watching their stock suffer
sometimes with inevitable consequences;
we are conscious of those
who are struggling to find feed and water
for the stock under their care.

We pray for all involved in fighting the fire:
for our Rural Fire Service and their leadership
and all those we know and those we do not know;
we pray for courage in a place of fear;
for new strength in the face of exhaustion;
for people who have travelled distances
in order to resource those who experience fatigue.

We pray for all who offer support and care at this time:
for the various agencies, churches and community groups;
for disaster response chaplains;
for government services as they are activated;
for friends and neighbours, known and unknown;
for providing a shoulder upon which to lean, or weep;
we give thanks too,
for the generosity of many, in small and large ways,
to those who are struggling.

We are mindful of the days, weeks and months ahead,
for many dangerous days yet to come,
for seasons of recovery and rebuilding,
of homes, farms, lives and communities;
we pray for strength, courage, patience and hope
as grieving continues,
as frustrations rise
and inevitable changes occur.

We pray, too, knowing that we are entering a harsher climate,
less predictable and more volatile;
as we care for each other, help us to care for your creation,
to be worthy stewards and advocates
of all which you have made.

Keep us faithful and alert in our praying and our action
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

God Almighty giver and sustainer of life,
For those whose homes are threatened by fire,
we ask your mercy.
For those whose lives are threatened by flames,
We pray your protection.
For those who have lost all their possessions,
We prayer your comfort.
For those whose health is impaired by smoke,
We pray your healing.
Be with those who respond,
Keep safe firefighters, police and volunteers.
Make their efforts effective.
God in your mercy,
Hear our prayers.
Amen

Eternal God,
In wisdom and love
you created our earth
to sustain us and give us life.
We turn to you now
in faith, hope and love,
asking you to look with favour
on our fire-ravaged and drought-stricken land,
on our starving and
displaced animals,
on our failing crops and burning
farms, towns and forests.
Strengthen, sustain and give new heart
to our farmers
and to all who are affected by drought;
be with those who support them.
Strengthen and comfort the victims of the fires,
those who have lost family, friends, property and stock.
Protect our volunteer firefighters and all members of essential services.
In your loving providence,
send abundant rain to quench the fires
and to restore our parched earth.
Father of all compassion,
hear our prayer
through Jesus Christ your Son,
in whom the promise of new life
has dawned, and
through the power
of the Holy Spirit,
the Lord the giver of life:
Renew your faithful people;
Renew the face of the earth.

Almighty God, your son Jesus Christ has promised that you will hear us when we ask in faith: receive the prayers we offer:

for those who have experienced loss

We pray for those who lives and livelihoods have been affected by recent fires. We pray for those who have lost homes and businesses, for those who were scared and have been traumatized by their experience, comfort and heal them in body, mind and spirit and give them hope of restoration.

Father, hear our prayer Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

for devastated communities

We pray for the communities of Dunalley, Boomer Bay, Connelly's Marsh, Murdunna, Sommers Bay, Primrose Sands, Taranna, Eaglehawk Neck, Marion Bay, Ellendale, Karanja, Ouse, Hamilton, Richmond, Bicheno, Montumana, Holwell as well as those on the mainland impacted by recent fires, that they may be helped, strengthened and restored by the concern and practical care they are receiving.

Father, hear our prayer Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

for the emergency services

We give thanks for the selfless service of all who fought and who continue fighting the bushfires. Grant them protection in danger and strengthen them physically and psychologically for the ongoing demands put upon them.

Father, hear our prayer Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

for those giving care

We give thanks for all who are caring for the victims of the fires, for the emergency response teams, service providers, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul Society, local churches and community groups, the chaplains, and all those assisting at all levels of government, local, state and federal. Guide them in their labour and give wisdom that those who have suffered loss may get the care and support they need.

Father, hear our prayer Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

for generosity

We give thanks for the generous response of the Tasmanian and Australian people to those in need. May we give generously of our material wealth as to enable lives and communities to be restored.

Father, hear our prayer Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

for care of the environment.

We give thanks for this world which sustains us, forgive us for the damage we have brought upon the environment through negligence, indifference and greed, heal your creation and teach us to be good stewards of its bounty.

Father, hear our prayer Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
