Love That Does Not Fail

Saint of the Day
Sts. Cyril and Methodius

Sts. Cyril (826-869) and Methodius (815-885) were brothers from Thessalonica who became missionaries to the Slavic peoples. Cyril is credited with creating the Glagolitic alphabet so that the Scriptures and liturgy could be translated into the Slavonic language. After Cyril died in Rome, Methodius continued their mission amid fierce opposition. They are venerated as "Apostles to the Slavs" and are co-patron saints of Europe. Their feast is celebrated on February 14 in the Roman Rite.

Scripture Reading

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Reflection
On a day the world celebrates love, Paul's hymn reminds us that real love is less a feeling and more a daily choice — patient, humble, enduring. Sts. Cyril and Methodius showed this kind of love by devoting their lives to sharing the Gospel with Slavic peoples, even creating an alphabet so they could read it in their own tongue. Love, at its deepest, always seeks the good of the other.
