Scripture Reading

Psalm 51:10-12

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Reflection
Psalm 51 is the great Lenten psalm, the cry of David after his deepest failure. He does not ask for improved behavior or better resolve; he asks for a new heart — something only God can give. The deepest Lenten movement is not self-improvement but the prayer for divine re-creation: create in me, O God. We bring the broken clay; he does the forming.
