Saint of the Day
The Blessed Virgin Mary

The dogma of the Immaculate Conception, defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854, holds that Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception, by the anticipated merits of Christ. This feast celebrates God's singular preparation of the one who would bear the Son of God. Mary's life of faith, humility, and radical surrender to God's will makes her the model disciple of every age.

Scripture Reading

Luke 1:28, 30-31

The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." ... But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus."
Reflection
The angel's greeting cuts straight to the heart: you are highly favored, the Lord is with you. This is the mystery of the Immaculate Conception — not a statement of Mary's self-achievement but of God's extraordinary preparation and grace. What God said to Mary, he whispers to every soul he calls: do not be afraid; I am with you; I have a purpose for you.
Prayer for Today
O Virgin, most pure, wholly unspotted, O Mary, Mother of God, Queen of the universe, you are above all the saints, the hope of the elect and the joy of all the blessed. It is you who have reconciled us with God. You are the only refuge of sinners and the safe harbor of those who are shipwrecked. You are the consolation of the world, the ransom of captives, the health of the weak, the joy of the afflicted, and the salvation of all. We have recourse to you, and we beseech you to have pity on us. Amen.

Amen.
