Scripture Reading
Isaiah 61:1-2a
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.
Reflection
Jesus would read these very words in the synagogue at Nazareth and say, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." This Advent text is not only prophecy — it is job description. The one who is coming brings good news to the poor, freedom to the captive, sight to the blind. His advent is always an advent of liberation.
Prayer for Today
For the powerful who are enslaved by the fear of losing privilege or possessions, Free them from their fears, O God. For men and women in positions of responsibility who can influence and enrich the lives of others, Free them from their fears, O God. Make them strong to do your will, that your justice may be fulfilled in love. For the whole church and ourselves as members of it, For faithfulness in sharing in Christ's work in the world, For obedience to the guiding of the Holy Spirit, Make us string to do you will, O God.
Amen.
