Prayer For Elected Officials
Dear God, we lift up our elected officials. During this time of difficult and serious decision making, we pray that you put a spirit of civility and reconciliation into the hearts of those called to lead our country. Give them discernment, humility, empathy, and willingness to put the common good above politics. Amen.
Omniscient Father in Heaven, we give thanks that you have brought us through another election in our country. We pray you would fill all those in leadership roles with your compassion, wisdom, and resolve to make sacrifices, and right decisions for the common good of man. Let our leaders be guided by your holy spirit, and not by selfish ambition, pride, or greed. Give them grace and humility, yet strength of character, and commitment to promote your will throughout the world. May they ever be aware that you are our creator, our savior, and our redeemer; and without you no real peace, no real joy, and no true victory is achievable. Change our hearts, O God, and make us better people. Amen.
Thou kind Lord! This gathering is turning to thee. These hearts are radiant with thy love. These minds and spirits are exhilarated by the message of thy glad-tidings. O God! Let this American democracy become glorious in spiritual degrees even as it has aspired to material degrees, and render this just government victorious. Confirm this revered nation to upraise the standard of the oneness of humanity, to promulgate the most great peace, to become thereby most glorious and praiseworthy among all the nations of the world. O God! This American nation is worthy of thy favors and is deserving of thy mercy. Make it precious and near to thee through thy bounty and bestowal.'Abdu'l-Bah.
God of each of us and God of all of us, we trust that you are present with the leaders of our country as they go about their important work. We pray they use the gifts, talents and intelligence you have given them to faithfully weigh courses of actions and make decisions. Because they are humans, Lord, be as patient with them as we would want you to be with us. Help us as a nation be supportive of our leaders, drawing strength from what unites us instead of dwelling on what divides us. May we always seek the greater good and the well-being of others through our words and actions. Help us to witness to your love by continuing to love our neighbor, especially the ones who had the other candidate's yard sign on their lawn. And, as always, may your will be done here on earth. Amen.
Give us, O God,
leaders whose hearts are large enough
to match the breadth of our own souls
and give us souls strong enough
to follow leaders of vision and wisdom.
In seeking a leader, let us seek
more than development for ourselves
though development we hope for
more than security for our own land
though security we need
more than satisfaction for our wants
though many things we desire.
Give us the hearts to choose the leader
who will work with other leaders
to bring safety
to the whole world.
Give us leaders
who lead this nation to virtue
without seeking to impose our kind of virtue
on the virtue of others.
Give us a government
that provides for the advancement
of this country
without taking resources from others
to achieve it.
Give us insight enough ourselves
to choose as leaders those who can tell
strength from power,
growth from greed,
leadership from dominance,
and real greatness from the trappings of grandiosity.
We trust you, Great God,
to open our hearts to learn from those
to whom you speak in different tongues
and to respect the life and words
of those to whom you entrusted
the good of other parts of this globe.
We beg you, Great God,
give us the vision as a people
to know where global leadership truly lies,
to pursue it diligently,
to require it to protect human rights
for everyone everywhere.
We ask these things, Great God,
with minds open to your word
and hearts that trust in your eternal care.
O God, from whom all power comes,
by whose Divine will all must abide,
we thank You for our civil liberties and freedom,
for our opportunities and our privileges.
We beg of You to bless, assist,
and enlighten the Senators from our State
(here mention their names)
and the Congressman for our District
(here mention his name).
May they prove worthy of the confidence placed in them
by their fellow citizens.
May they be just and upright in their thinking,
honest in all their actions,
and ever be guided by a true conscience in the
legislation they propose or vote upon.
Forgive us all our mistakes and selfish tendencies,
and help prepare us by our good deeds
for an eternal union with You,
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Dear Heavenly Father,
I come before you with a humble and grateful heart. I ask you to lift up those who are seated in places of authority in our nation President Trump, those representing me in the United States Senate, in the U.S. House, and those representing me in our state house.
Please give them wisdom on the difficult issues they are discussing and deciding on my behalf.
We ask that each representative would submit themselves to you God, the ultimate authority in each one of our lives.
Help them to recognize rights are not granted by government, they are given by you.
We pray they would use government to help secure peaceful and quiet living in our communities while respecting the proper role of your institutions of family and the church.
We know we are all sinful, subject to fall short, so we ask for an extra measure of humbleness for each of our elected officials to know wisdom only comes from you Lord.
Please protect and strengthen each one of their families, especially during times of separation.
We pray for those who lead us and do not know the saving grace of Jesus Christ and pray they will come to know you.
We ask all this in Jesus Name.
Amen.
